Tusket Islands Group

Back

Last Update March 3, 2005

The Tusket Islands, amid all of their rugged beauty and mystery, require a deep respect from the paddler.  Wind, fog, a tidal range of 12-14 feet, and currents - all make the Tusket Islands a challenge.  In particular watch out for Schooner Passage, Hell's Gate, and the outmost Tusket Islands. It is recommended that only experienced paddlers attempt paddling here. Novice paddlers should not paddle the Tuskets without a qualified guide. You will find many of the inner islands busy with fishing or pleasure boats as many people own houses on these islands and use them for summer living and vacations.

Patrick LeBlanc, who owns all or part of the islands listed below, has been so kind as to give permission for paddlers to tent overnight on them. Most of these islands have sheep on them.  When in conversation about these islands he reported some sheep on Peases Island had been killed by coyotes.  Please apply No-Trace camping practices to keep our welcome open to others in the future.
