Last Update March 3, 2005

Outer Island, also known as Bon Portage,  is located off the southwest of Shag Harbour.  It was here that the book "We Keep a Light" was written by Evelyn M. Richardson. The Bon Portage Lighthouse is one of the many scenic lighthouses that can be enjoyed as you paddle this coast.

Outer Island is now owned by Acadia University and is used from spring until fall by Acadia University biology students. Migratory bird counts and banding of migrant birds is done regularly.  For more information about Bon Portage Island visit their web page: http://ace.acadiau.ca/~dshutler/homepage.htm

Paddlers wanting to tent overnight on Outer Island may do so by contacting Dave Shutler <dave.shutler@acadiau.ca> and he will further instruct you about payment. A fee of $10.00 per night per person with use of the outhouses is charged. If you want to use the bunkhouse, and there is room available, a fee of $20.00 per person will be charged.
